Poor Kate

We were getting ready to watch a show together as a family Saturday night and the girls were all sitting on the couch waiting for us to start. Jason set his hot, hot mug of tea on the desk and went to do something real quick before we began. Kate hopped off the couch and went over to his cup and tipped it to get a drink and ended up dumping the entire mug down her whole front. In the time it took her to run over to the kitchen to me for help, her shirt had held the scalding hot water against her arm and tummy.

We immediately pulled her clothes off and put her in the tub with cool water running and a wet towel, but it became clear pretty quickly as some big blisters started to form and then burst we better get to the ER. We did get some Motrin into her before leaving, and by the time we got to the ER, she was surprisingly calm, though quivering and flinching some from the obvious pain of the burns. Thankfully the doctor said that the burns appear to be only superficial, and while they will take a lot of care to heal, she should be okay. Jason was able to call his co-worker Brent, an older gentleman and father of six, to come over from Med-Surge to help give Kate a blessing. Kate was given some stronger pain medication and after giving it time take effect, the staff had to scrub off all the dead skin and clean the area before putting her ointment and bandages on. They recommended I not stick around for that part. When I came back, she was laying calmly in Jason's arms, transfixed by the cartoon they had turned on for her while they put these big medicated pads over her chest and arm and then wrapped her up. You can see the yellow-colored ointment soaking through her bandages today. The staff complimented Kate on how calm she was and how quickly she recovered from the ordeal of having the dead skin removed.

She's on a regiment of pain medication, but so far she is doing very well. We have to go back tonight so the doctor can reassess the extent of the burns and re-dress it, which will not be fun, especially now they she has done it once, but we are thankful. Things could have been much worse.
